One Day Trip to Beautiful Nikko

Nikko is a perfect choice for those who want to escape from the big city and find a peaceful place by the mountains. In Nikko, visitors can find the Toshogu shrine, stablished in 1617 to enshrine Tokunawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Tokunawa shogunate. Most of the present-day shrine complex was rebuilt in 1636. In December 1999, UNESCO registered the shrine complex as a World Heritage site.

One of the main attractions of the Toshogu shrine is Sanzaru, a frieze of eight panels of carvings of monkeys depicting the lives of ordinary people. One of them, the one depicting the “See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil” three wise monkeys, is particularly famous.
